During the spring people throughout the state gaze at the beautiful flower blossoms and picnic on fried chicken, gumbo, and other southern delicacies. When the fall finally arrives, people throughout the state flock to the Grove to tailgate before big Ole Miss football games. Mississippi is an amazing state filled with great opportunities for adventure and finding nursing schools in Mississippi, too.

Nursing Education in Mississippi

Nursing is an incredibly popular career field in Mississippi. The Mississippi Board of Nursing, along with the Mississippi State Institutions of Higher Learning and Mississippi Community College Board all work together to certify institutions to offer nursing programs. Each school must offer students the best possible nursing education while properly preparing them for the final nursing exam. Students can become Licensed Practical nurses or Registered nurses depending on the program that they enter.

There are numerous nursing programs in the state of Mississippi because there is a large demand for nurses within the state. Those that want an LPN degree should strongly consider Jones County Junior College, in Ellisville. This program is known for producing excellent nurses, and their students perform extremely well on the national exams. Jones County alums have a 97% pass rate on the NCLEX exams.

Registered nurses are also extremely popular in Mississippi. One of the top nursing programs in the state is the University of Mississippi. This university is known for producing top-flight nurses. As nurses continue their careers throughout the state, they have several opportunities to advance their careers. They have an opportunity to become Doctorates of Nursing or even Nurse Practitioners. There are numerous hospitals throughout the state and they all are constantly looking for new nurses.

University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing

The CCNE accredited School of Nursing at UMMC has direct access to four specialized hospitals, including the state’s only children’s hospital, a women’s and infant’s hospital, an adult hospital, and a critical care hospital which give students access to clinical experiences not found anywhere else in the state.

The programs on offer at UMMC are flexible enough to cater to almost any preferred program of studies. The four BSN routes offer candidates a selection of traditional, accelerated, early-entry and RN to BSN options while aspiring master’s students can choose from a standard MSN, an early-entry MSN, and an RN to MSN route. There are five doctoral programs including paths from BSN to DNP and BSN to Ph.D.

University of Southern Mississippi School of Nursing

Nursing students following the four-year BSN program at the CCNE accredited University of Southern Mississippi, undertake general education requirements during their freshman and sophomore years. Once accepted into the nursing program, the last two years of study include both coursework and clinical practice. The comprehensive curriculum covers research, leadership, professionalism, ethics and legal issues, as well as practical nursing skills.

Graduate options include two MSN concentrations that are both delivered online with one campus visit per semester. Both full and part-time study options are on offer. The BSN to DNP nurse practitioner program requires seven semesters of full-time study including summers. For both programs, students complete clinical requirements in their own local or nearby communities.

There are two tracks on offer for the Ph.D. program both of which operate on a 100% online basis, a post-master’s and a post-bachelor’s option.

Mississippi University for Women School of Nursing

Despite its name, the “W” has been co-educational since 1982 and the BSN program at this CCNE accredited school tops the list of its most popular majors. The aim of the BSN program, which offers both a traditional four-year track and an accelerated RN to BSN track, is to prepare nurse generalists who act as change agents ready to take the lead promoting and maintaining health and improving healthcare outcomes.

The MSN curriculum extends and refines the knowledge and skills of baccalaureate level education incorporating the experience of a practicing professional nurse. Two post-graduate certificate options and a DNP track offer additional choices for qualified candidates.

Delta State University School of Nursing

The Robert E. Smith School of Nursing at Delta State University aims to prepare nurses who can meet the healthcare needs of the people of Mississippi and who have the right academic foundations for study beyond the baccalaureate level. The nursing programs are approved and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

BSN students must enroll for general education courses at Delta State prior to applying to the nursing school. Once admitted, students embark on a full-time five-semester web-enhanced curriculum. Part-time study preferences can also be accommodated. The wholly online RN to BSN program can be completed in two semesters, while the three MSN concentrations are delivered in a hybrid course format which incorporates a number of seminars delivered on campus in addition to online studies. Various pathways to a DNP award are available depending upon previous academic attainment.
